마을의 상징,곡물 저장 엘리베이터..Grain Elevators, Fillmore Saskatchewan Dec 9 2011

마을 '더 가득 채워 주세요' 를 지날 즈음에야

이 멋진 곡물 저장고가 눈에 들어 왔다.

거대한 평원의 곡창지대 위에 30 ~ 50 킬로미터 정도를 거리를 두고 형성된 타운들..

농부의 한해 산물인 각종 곡물들은 농촌 마을의 상징인 엘리베이터에 모두 수거된 후, 

곡물 전용 화물 열차에 실려 캐나다 각지의 도시들로, 또 수출을 위해 항구로 나가게 된다.

내가 지금 거처하는 Oxbow 에 처음 당도 했을 때, 

저 거대하고도 우스운 모양의 저장고가 왜 저렇게 서 있는지 잘 알지 못 했었다.

끝 없는 평원의 하이웨이를 질주 하면서 간혹 나타나는 마을을 지날 때면,

마을이 보이기 훨씬 전에 저 키 큰 엘이베이터가 가장 먼저 눈에 들어 오곤 했었다. 

그리고 이 저장고 앞에는 언제나 철길이 달리고 있었다.

Railway Ave.. 철길 애비뉴.. 는 이곳의 어느 마을에서나 가장 중심이 되는 길을 의미했다.

그 레일웨이 애비뉴 중심에 이곳 농민들의 자부심이자 희망인 저 거대한 탑이 우뚝 서있었던 거다. 

As the rate of wooden grain elevator de-commissioning and demolition accelerated in Saskatchewan during the 1990s, public attention came to focus increasingly on the dwindling number of these unique structures. Elevator closures and rail line abandonment became inextricably linked to questions of economic viability in many of Saskatchewan’s small communities. 
Rural residents in particular became more and more uneasy as these long-familiar landmarks - country elevators - began to disappear at an accelerating rate. The number of active elevators at this time (supplemented with some inactive ones known to still exist) was approximately 800.
